Pad printing, tampography, or tampo printing is a gravure or indirect printing technique that can transfer a 2-D image onto a 3-D object. The tampography process leverages an indirect offset (gravure) printing process, which moves an image from the cliché through a silicone pad and onto a substrate. Pad printing is typically used to print complex and difficult prints on products in various industries, including electronics, medical devices, automotive, apparel, sports equipment, and toys.

How a Pad Printing Machine Works

Printing pads are made of silicone material, and the type of silicone and hardness of a pad depends on its specific application. The pad is designed to compress onto the ink-filled etch, so it picks up the image. The pad will then move over the part and compress onto it to apply an image. Notably, the pad printing machine leverages three components to deliver paint to a substrate: the ink cup, the plate, and the pad. The plate is etched with an image, and the ink cup that houses the ink slides over an etched plate, which leaves a minimal amount of ink in the etch.
